According to Thai media reports and Overseas Chinese Network platform, a 31-year-old male Chinese tourist died after drowning while snorkeling in the waters of Mu Ko Similan National Park.The reports state that the tourist had entered Thailand on a group tour comprised of 27 people and checked into a hotel in Phuket. The group then went to Similan island for sightseeing on January 5.At around 10:40 am of that day, he put on a life jacket, a snorkeling mask and then jumped off the boat for snorkelling.However, witnesses say he removed the mask while in the water and appeared to lose consciousness. The boat's crew rescued him from the waters and conducted first aid before transfering him to the hospital for emergency treatment.The Similan National Park staff told reporters that the hospital report indicated that the tourist had a large amount of seawater in his lungs, which led to suffocation and losing consciousness.He passed away at the hospital despite emergency treatment efforts by staff at the hospital, and his body was transfered to a hospital in Phuket for further investigation.The incident has been reported to the Chinese Embassy in Thailand.A cursory search on the internet revealed that there are many cases of tourists in Thailand drowning while snorkeling, and it includes numerous Chinese tourists.In March of last year, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand published an article, reminding Chinese citizens to pay attention to and strengthen safety precautions when participating in snorkeling activities in the country.
Apart from snorkeling activities, the embassy also reminds Chinese citizens to be vigilant and pay attention to safety when participating in other water related activities.
